Libby Elementary School Mission Statement
We are committed to engaging all students in a positive learning environment, enabling them to reach their full potential with dignity. We strive to effectively teach students to communicate, interact cooperatively, solve problems, and function in a changing society.
School Immunizations
Basic immunization requirements are as follows:
- DPT – four doses; at least one after the fourth birthday
- POLIO – three doses; at least one after the fourth birthday
- MEASLES/MUMPS/RUBELLA – one dose after first birthday; second dose prior to entering sixth grade, but not later than thirteenth birthday
Textbooks and Educational Materials
The district furnishes textbooks and supplementary educational materials to all students. Students are responsible for textbooks and materials checked out to them, and are expected to exercise care in the treatment of these items. Students are required to pay for lost or damaged books and materials. Charges will be based upon the replacement cost of the item.
Student Injuries and Insurance
Even with the greatest precautions and closest supervision, accidents can and do happen at school. Parents need to be prepared for possible medical expenses that may arise should their child be injured at school. The school district does not provide medical insurance to automatically pay for medical expenses when students are injured at school. This is the responsibility of the parents or legal guardians. The district carries only legal liability insurance.
The district does make students medical insurance available to families for individual purchase. Brochures outlining the coverage and premiums are handed out at the beginning of the school year and are available in the front office.
Parent/Teacher Conferences and Report Cards
Parent – Teacher conferences are held in the fall. We feel these conferences play an important part in exchanging information, which helps to better understand your child. We do hop you will make every effort to be present when conferences are scheduled. Any time you want an additional conference, please feel free to contact us and we will make the necessary arrangements.
Dress Regulations
Students are expected to dress in modest attire for school, and to avoid unclean and extreme hairstyles and dress. Any clothing displaying drugs, tobacco or alcohol products, which expresses obscenities, pornographic, or suggestive material, or which immodestly exposes a student‘s chest, abdomen, buttocks, genital area, or undergarments, is prohibited. This includes garments with spaghetti straps or see-through materials, and low-riding pants. Chains that could be used as a weapon are not permitted. Dresses and skirts should be modest in length. Shirts with large armholes must be worn with a t-shirt underneath. Shorts will be permitted, but must be free of holes and modest in appearance. Caps are not to be worn in the building, and are subject to confiscation. Coats will not normally be allowed during class. Any clothing or appearance that disrupts the education of others is considered a violation of the dress code and will be dealt with by the staff and/or administration.
Recesses
Students are expected to be outside for the recesses unless adverse weather conditions necessitate indoor activities. Students should be dresses according to the weather conditions. If this is done, there is no reason for students to remain inside. During periods of “air quality alert,” students will be required to remain inside. A student may remain indoors if there is a signed note from a physician stating the child is well enough to be in school, but not well enough to be outdoors.
Medicines Given at School
Medications are sometimes necessary for students during the school day. Prescription or non-prescription medication may be administered by any certified school personnel, school nurse, or other individual designated by the building principal with written orders of a physician and written parental permission. This applies to all medication. The medication must be brought to the front office by an adult in a container appropriately labeled by the pharmacist or physician. A doctor’s note is necessary to be excused from P.E.
Drug Free School Statement
The Libby Public Schools have adopted and implemented education and prevention programs at all grade levels, which address the legal, social, and health consequences of drug and alcohol use. These programs provide information about effective techniques for resisting peer pressure. School policy does not condone, sanction, or allow the use or presence of alcoholic beverages, illegal drugs and mood altering substances, or the use of tobacco products on school property. Should a student be found in violation of this policy, he or she will be suspended. Repeated violations or failure to complete an intervention program may lead to expulsion.
Bicycles
For safety reasons, students are not allowed to ride bicycles on the school grounds during the school day (8:00-4:00). Bikes are kept in the racks provided and not removed until dismissal time. Students are not to play around the bike racks to avoid injury to themselves or the property of others.
Lost and Found
Please check at the “Lost and Found” regularly. Items are kept in the cabinet to the right of the main entry doors. At the end of each quarter, all unclaimed articles are given to a charity.
Student Supplies
Supplies needed vary depending upon the grade levels. Teachers will provide a list of basic supplies needed for students.
School Breakfast and Lunch
Breakfast is served in the Lunchroom from 7:30 to 8:00 daily. The cost for breakfast is $0.90, or with a reduced price of $0.30.
Students remain at school during the noon break. If a student lives close to the school and parents would like for that student to go home each day, please contact the office. If parents wish to come to take their child out to lunch, please be sure to sign the child out at the front office. Students may bring a sack lunch or purchase hot lunch. Hot lunch is available for $1.75, with a reduced price of $0.40. Milk is included with lunch, or may be purchased separately for $0.30. Free and reduced price lunch and breakfast applications are available in the office.
Visitation
Parents are encouraged to visit the school. Calling for an appointment will ensure that teachers are available to talk to you. All people who enter the school should come in through the main doors in the front of the building. Please stop at the front office to SIGN IN and receive a VISITORS PASS. This is a safety precaution to ensure that all students are kept in a safe environment. When you leave the building, please SIGN OUT and return the visitors pass. It is important that we know who is in the building at any given time.
School Hours
The first bell rings at 8:00 a.m. for students to line up and come into the building. The school day ends at 3:00 p.m.
BEFORE SCHOOL: Please do not have students, who plan on eating breakfast, at school before 7:40 if possible. If a bus arrives later than 8:05, those students will be served breakfast as soon as their bus arrives.
