After School Program

Brought to you by: A 21st Century Community Learning Center Grant and Libby Public Schools' Mrs. Waters-Barcomb

The After School program is set up to provide:

  • High-quality services to support academic activities focusing on reading and math proficiency.
  • A highly qualified teacher for co-ordination, academic intervention and support.
  • A safe, fun learning environment that is supervised and structured.
  • An opportunity to include parents as partners by providing opportunities to participate in activities.
  • Enrichment activities that include community volunteers.

Who: Students in grades 1 - 3 who have been invited to participate in the program.

Where: Students will meet  for snack and then disperse for their learning sessions.

When: Snack and attendance will begin at 3:15.  Instruction time will run from 3:30-4:45 P.M. (Some instruction may begin in the early afternoon during the regular school day.)

Fun things planned for this year:

1. Work toward becoming proficient in reading and math by:

  • being able to use Knowledge Box - a new exciting computer program that
  • teaches necessary skills in a fun, motivating way.
  • focusing on individual areas where your child needs to improve.

2. Homework tutoring to allow more time at home for family activities.

3. Breakfast Club Tutoring: Pairing our students with high school student volunteers.

4. Family Fun Nights - Watch for informational fliers advertising these events.

5. Enrichment activities involving community volunteers. A healthy snack will be provided every day along with a safe and fun place to be after school.

Academic Reinforcement

This is the "heart " of the program and targets students who need reinforcement in the areas of math and reading.  Entry into these section is by invitation.  We use fun and innovative activities to help students improve in areas of deficiency.  This portion provides time for homework tutoring.  We ask that parents and children sign a compact when registering for this strand.

Enrichment Activities

This strand provides reward activities for student enrichment in core academies (math, reading, science and social science) as well as art, music, drama and recreation.  We hope to use community volunteers for presentations in their area of expertise.  An enrichment activity could mean learning about local history or learning the basics of jitterbugging.   Our goal is to have parents participate in this portion of the program.  We will sponsor Family Fun Nights as we progress through the school year.  Please feel free to share any ideas you may have.  We would love your input.
